We are lucky enough to have some visitors in Reception at the moment! They are 5 lovely caterpillars who arrived on the second day of the Summer term. We are really enjoying watching them grow day by day and we are keeping a diary of how they change. We are fascinated by how they are preparing themselves to spin cocoons and we can't wait to see how they emerge as butterflies!
Oliver's Vegetables and Oliver's Fruit Salad
We enjoyed sharing these books about Oliver's adventures with food have been learning to identify lots of different fruits and vegetables; to talk about what we like and dislike, and how some people like different things. We tasted some exotic fruits including some we had never seen before, and used our careful cutting skills to chop fruits to make fruit kebabs.
Snow Day Cafe
When the snow came and it was too chilly to be outside for very long we turned our classroom into a cafe! The children made table numbers and ordered hot chocolate from a menu. It was a snow day treat and warmed us all up!
Whatever Next and Space
We learnt about the story Whatever Next by Jill Murphy in which Baby Bear builds himself a rocket and flies to the moon for a picnic! We also spent time looking at some non fiction writing about Space to learn how to use non-fiction texts and also to learn some new facts.
Here are some photos of some of the things we have been getting up to...
You might spot us...
- Building rockets out of 3D shapes.
- Sorting 2D shapes.
- Building a space ship in our role play area. (We even made some books for our astronauts to read on their journey!)
- Ordering numbers and finding missing numbers.
- Writing about what we would see in space, and what we might take with us to space.
- Using our fine motor skills to create aliens.
and lots more...
World Book Day
For World Book Day we dressed up as our favourite characters from the books we have been learning about in Reception. We saw some fantastic and creative costumes including the tiger from The Tiger Who Came To Tea; Goldilocks; bears; Sonny the duck with the wonderful wellies; as well as space inspired costumes and lots more.
We are really pleased with how our Christmas nativity went and are very grateful for the wonderful turn out of parents, carers, friends and family. Here are some videos of the children singing the songs for you to enjoy.
We learnt all about the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We dressed up as the characters to retell the story, explored oats that are used to make porridge, and we even made some porridge of our own! When we tasted it most children gave it the thumbs up!
During our topic of people who help us we learnt all about people in the community as well as people who do different jobs to help us around our school. After visiting the fire station we turned our role play area into a class doctor's surgery and enjoyed making up illnesses and injuries for ourselves and our friends! Then we had special visits in class from Mrs Wicks who works in the office and Mr Hornibrook the caretaker. We practised asking questions to find out all about what they do.
We had a wonderful trip to the fire station. The firefighters showed us all of the special tools in the fire engines, even their tea and coffee machine! We had the opportunity to sit in the fire engine, the boat, and also to spray the hose! We even got a bit wet when the firefighters played a trick on us with the hose! We got to see the firefighters slide down the pole and we heard the alarm sound that tells the firefighters when they have a call-out. It was a great trip! Here are some photos of what we got up to.
We celebrated Diwali by wearing our special clothes to school and sharing all our Diwali news from home with our friends. We made decorations, had mehndi painted on our hands, bindis on our heads, danced to music, and made some yummy coconut barfi to taste.
Here are some photos from our first term in Reception. We have all settled in really well.
