Learning Intention:

To explore different arrangements of numbers

To use smaller numbers within large arrangements to subitise quickly

Arranging numbers  into small groups will support the children to conceptually subitise and see how the numbers are made up of smaller numbers.

Subitise means recognising an amount instantly without counting

Exploring 6,7 & 8

Watch the video and then practise subitising with larger numbers. Show your child different amounts (start with 4 and work up to 8) and ask them to tell you how many, without counting. Try different arrangements and ask them how do you know? Get them to show you the smaller numbers that helped them to recognise quickly.

For more practise, use this game (choose "counting" option) to encourage quickly recognising amounts, by spotting smaller numbers. Remember no counting, that's too easy!
