            Autumn Term

Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, Shape

In Year 2, the White Rose Maths Autumn Term overview sets the foundation for key mathematical skills that children will continue to build on throughout the year. During the autumn term, pupils revisit and deepen their understanding of place value, exploring numbers to 100, partitioning, comparing, and ordering them with confidence. They also develop fluency in addition and subtraction, using a variety of methods such as number lines, practical resources, and mental strategies.

As the term progresses, children begin to explore shape. Reasoning and problem-solving are woven throughout every unit, encouraging pupils to think critically, explain their methods, and apply their learning in different ways.

The Autumn curriculum aims to strengthen number sense, provide opportunities for practice and mastery, and build confidence so that all children are ready to tackle more complex concepts in the spring and summer terms.
