Year three curriculum

Curriculum Overview

In Year 3 at E P Collier School, pupils begin their journey into Key Stage 2, where independence, responsibility, and confidence are actively nurtured. Our curriculum is underpinned by strong school values, including respect, resilience, kindness, and aspiration, ensuring that academic learning is always supported by personal development. Children are encouraged to become curious learners who take pride in their achievements, show consideration for others, and develop the confidence to express their ideas and opinions within a safe, supportive, and inclusive school community.

The Year 3 curriculum follows the National Curriculum for England and provides a broad, balanced, and engaging programme of study. In English, pupils develop reading fluency, comprehension, handwriting, spelling, grammar, and creative writing skills through high-quality texts. Mathematics focusses on securing number knowledge, calculation strategies, timetables, problem-solving, and reasoning. Science introduces key concepts in biology, chemistry, and physics through practical investigation and enquiry-based learning. Foundation subjects include history, geography, computing, art and design, design technology, music, physical education, and religious education, ensuring pupils experience a rich and varied curriculum that develops knowledge, skills, and creativity.

Across all subjects, learning in Year 3 is carefully designed to promote independence, resilience, collaboration, and high expectations. Pupils are supported to think critically, ask thoughtful questions, and apply their learning in meaningful contexts. Our approach ensures that children not only meet the expectations of the National Curriculum but also grow as confident, respectful, and motivated learners who embody the values of E P Collier School and are well-prepared for the next stage of their education.
