Science

In Science this term, Year 1 will be learning about common animals and their basic structure. The children will explore different groups of animals, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.

Throughout the topic, children will identify and name a range of common animals. They will describe and compare the structure of different animals, looking at features such as wings, fins, legs and tails and begin to understand how these features help them to live in their environments.

The children will learn about different animal diets. They will identify, name and sort animals that are herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.

Towards the end of the unit, the children will be introduced to simple food chains and will begin to understand how animals depend on plants and other animals for food.
