This term in Year 1, children will be exploring the topic: Our Beautiful World.

Throughout this unit, pupils will begin to develop their geographical skills and understanding of the world around them. They will learn to use simple maps and atlases to locate important places, including the Equator, North Pole and South Pole. 

Children will explore where hot and cold places are found around the world and begin to understand how location affects the climate.

They will also be introduced to basic map skills, including:

• Revisiting the four compass points (North, South, East, West)

• Using a map key to recognise symbols

• Creating their own simple map
