Autumn Term
In Year 2, our English curriculum is designed to build confidence and independence through a skills-based approach. Writing always has a clear audience and purpose, helping pupils to see the value of their work and develop pride in their written outcomes. We place strong emphasis on writing for purpose, whether that be to inform or entertain, so that children understand the different ways writing can be used in the real world. They are encouraged to make deliberate choices in vocabulary, sentence structure, and organisation, developing a writer’s voice from an early stage.
Handwriting is a key focus throughout the year, with time dedicated to ensuring children develop clear and correctly formed letters. This supports not only presentation but also confidence and stamina in longer pieces of writing.
Through repetition, purposeful writing, and attention to handwriting, our Year 2 English curriculum nurtures children as capable, motivated, and enthusiastic young writers.
