This is an exciting and important year, where children continue to build on the foundations laid in Reception. Our focus is on developing key early literacy skills that will support children throughout their learning journey.
In Year 1, children will be learning to write with greater independence, using finger spaces, capital letters and full stops to form clear and correctly punctuated sentences. Handwriting is a key focus and we help children to develop neat, legible writing through regular practice.
Children will also be using their knowledge of phonics to spell both familiar and unfamiliar words, helping them become confident and capable writers.
Our aim is to create a nurturing and engaging environment where every child can thrive and develop a love of reading and writing.
Throughout the Autumn term we will be using the following texts as a stimulus for our writing:
Little Red Riding Hood and other traditional tales
Leaf Man by Ehlert
Vlad and the Great Fire of London by Kate Cunningham
The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt
