This Year 3 mathematics curriculum is structured across the academic year to ensure clear progression, continuity, and secure understanding of key mathematical concepts. Learning is organised by term (Autumn, Spring and Summer) and sequenced into focused units that build knowledge systematically, while allowing regular opportunities for reinforcement and consolidation.
Autumn Term: Pupils develop strong foundations in number through place value, addition and subtraction, and multiplication and division. The focus is on understanding number structure, developing efficient calculation strategies, and building confidence with mathematical language and reasoning.
Spring Term: Learning deepens through further work on multiplication and division, alongside measurement (length, perimeter, mass and capacity) and the introduction of fractions. Pupils apply their number skills in practical contexts and develop problem-solving and reasoning across a range of mathematical areas.
Summer Term: The curriculum broadens through fractions, money, time, geometry (shape), and statistics, with planned opportunities for consolidation and review. This ensures pupils leave Year 3 with secure core skills, confidence in applying mathematics, and a strong foundation for the next stage of learning.
