UKS2 Trip to Vue Cinema, Oracle

We have been given the opportunity to take the children on a special, fully funded class trip to Vue Cinema, The Oracle Riverside as part of into film festival that was running for schools last November.

UKS2 had chosen to watch ‘Kensuke's Kingdom’ as it is inspired by Michael Morpurgo book that links well with our curriculum in English, history, science and geography. Kensuke’s Kingdom is an adventure story about an eleven-year old boy and his dog who get ship-wrecked on a remote island. The boy Michael has been on a pleasant sail around the world with his parents when suddenly he falls overboard in the middle of the night.

Swans Trip to the Baylab Bayer

We have been given the opportunity to take the children on a special, fully funded class trip to the Baylab Bayer in Green Park, Reading for a half day full of science activities. The activities in this session have been developed to link with the UKS2 National Curriculum in science. In swans, we have extracted our DNA.

Throughout the visit, the children worked scientifically on an experiment: they observed closely, made predictions, collected data and problem solved, before working as a class to formulate their conclusions. They left eager to learn more, motivated and empowered.

Year 6 Trip to Green Park

We have been given the opportunity to take your child on a special, fully funded class visit to Green Park, Reading for an ‘Industry Taster Day’. The activities in this session provided the children with an insight to the pathways into the creative industries and they discovered exciting career opportunities.

Throughout the visit, your children stepped into the world of creativity. This hands-on event offered a chance for the Year 6s to try hand at screen skills like scriptwriting, green screen filming, animation and more. Children had the opportunity to meet professionals from across the creative industry, including photographers, make-up artists, fashion designers and film making teams.

Swans Reading for Pleasure Project

Reading for pleasure - the kind of reading children and adults choose to do in their own time, for their own purposes is important. It contributes to our world knowledge, imagination and well-being, in addition to developing children’s literacy. The will to read influences the skill (and vice versa). “Reading for pleasure has myriad other benefits such as a wider vocabulary and general knowledge, an enriched imagination and more developed narrative writing.” Professor Teresa Cremin.

In Swans class, we are seeking to build a vibrant community of readers and want to support parents to develop their children’s love of reading. Therefore, parents were invited to school in order to read with their children on a Friday afternoon across four weeks. During the sessions, we created a family reading tree and parents had the opportunity to develop a good understanding of what their children like to read as well as how to develop the skills that will enable them to support their children’s reading at home. This is part of a big research project with the Open University and will be published on their website.

Swans Trip to Leighton Park Chocolate Factory!

We have been given the opportunity to take the children on a special, fully funded class visit to Leighton Park School, Reading for a ‘Chocolate Factory’ cooking experience.

It was a fantastic workshop with lots of fun chocolate making experiences as well some history and ethics learning around chocolate, including the link the school has to the Cadbury family. The workshop was led by a specialist Food Tech Facilitator, Karen Hicks.
