Phonics and Early Reading at EP Collier

Phonics and Reading

Phonics is a way of teaching children to read quickly and skillfully. They are taught how to:

  • recognise the sounds that each individual letter makes;
  • identify the sounds that different combinations of letters make - such as ‘sh’ or ‘oo’; and
  • blend these sounds together from left to right to make a word.

Children can then use this knowledge to ‘blend’ the sounds in to a word. This is the first important step in learning to read.

Phonics Teaching

In Key Stage One up to 30 minutes of systematic phonic sessions every day. EYFS also receive daily phonics in short guided sessions. Children are grouped according to their knowledge of the sounds known.

We use one systematic phonic programme called Read Write Inc.

In Key Stage One children have the opportunity to change their reading books on a daily basis. These books are carefully matched to the child’s reading ability.

Targeted interventions using RWI phonics are delivered daily in KS2.
